American alternative-rock legends Smashing Pumpkins have released "Black Stars", an evocative original song recorded for the soundtrack to The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The release is an extraordinary creative reunion: it pairs frontman Billy Corgan with legendary producer Butch Vig for their first studio collaboration since the band's landmark 1993 masterpiece Siamese Dream.
Vig's groundbreaking production work helped define the sound and sonic scope of 1990s alternative rock, shaping seminal albums including Nirvana's Nevermind and Sonic Youth's Dirty alongside Smashing Pumpkins' earliest classics Gish and Siamese Dream. Corgan reached out to Vig after film producers invited him to pen an original composition while he was working on unrelated solo material.
Recording sessions took place primarily at Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles, with additional vocal and guitar overdubs completed in Chicago. The resulting recording captures the sweeping guitar crescendos and crystalline melodic detail that defined the duo's early-nineties chemistry, infused with cinematic modern grandeur.
Executive produced by Dave Cobb, the complete soundtrack album arrives on November 13 ahead of the film's theatrical debut on November 20, featuring contributions from twenty-nine artists including Noah Kahan. Explore more alternative rock retrospectives in our news hub.
