Los Angeles alternative-rock group Spanish Love Songs have released their fourth studio album Future Nausea through Pure Noise Records, combining the emotional intensity of melodic punk with the expansive arrangements associated with American heartland rock. The twelve-track collection follows 2023's No Joy and represents another important development in the band's songwriting.
Vocalist and guitarist Dylan Slocum has approached the album as a response to contemporary social anxiety, examining political division, economic insecurity, climate concerns and the emotional consequences of living through constant uncertainty. Rather than presenting these subjects through relentlessly bleak arrangements, the band frequently combines difficult lyrics with energetic guitars, prominent synthesizers and memorable choruses. Production was handled across separate sessions by Chris Walla, formerly of Death Cab for Cutie, and Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties.
Songs include "Good American", "Welcome to Hell", "New Fears", "Living Blues", "Doom Tripping", "Shadowland" and "Until the Sun Explodes". The album's title captures a sense of unease about the future, but its broader message places considerable importance on friendship, solidarity and emotional resilience. The release also coincides with recognition for the group's commitment to independent touring, including a National Independent Venue Association certification associated with a successful American tour.
Spanish Love Songs have developed a particularly dedicated audience through emotionally candid performances and anthemic arrangements. Future Nausea demonstrates that confronting uncomfortable realities need not eliminate the possibility of optimism. Apparently the world may be falling apart, but there is still time to turn up the guitars and sing together.
