Zambian singer, songwriter and producer T-Sean releases Woke Up Missing You today, a five-track EP created in memory of his late wife Sharai, who died on July 27. This is consequently one release where glib descriptions such as 'breakup record' would miss the emotional reality by several continents. T-Sean says much of the material began as notes written into his phone during sleepless nights, with some thoughts initially appearing as WhatsApp statuses while he attempted to process his grief.

Those fragments eventually became "Missing You," "Mutima Wakana," "Tears and Tequila Shots," "Nkosheni" and "Chimanibaba." The EP arrives on what would have marked a meaningful birthday for Sharai and functions less as a conventional promotional cycle than a musical memorial. T-Sean's career has moved freely between dancehall, Afropop, R&B and contemporary Zambian music, but Woke Up Missing You necessarily places emotional directness ahead of genre gymnastics.

There is something especially powerful about songs originating not from a scheduled writing camp but from sentences somebody needed to write simply to get through another night. Independent music often sells authenticity as though it were another production plug-in. Here there is nothing manufactured about it. Woke Up Missing You documents grief while it is still painfully close, turning private notes into something listeners dealing with their own losses may recognise.
