Ted Lucas' lost worlds reopen on Images of Life

Third Man Records releases Images of Life on 22 May, a major archival box set from cult guitarist, songwriter and visual artist Ted Lucas. The collection gathers rare and previously unreleased recordings across three LPs: Strange Mysterious Sounds, focused on early band work from 1965 to 1970; Rainy Days, collecting solo material from 1970 to 1974; and Impossible Love, a lost 1979 album produced by Don Was.

Lucas occupies a fascinating place in underground folk history. He studied sitar with Ravi Shankar, worked as a Motown session musician and later self-released music that gradually became mythic among collectors and deep-listening folk fans. His 1975 self-titled record, also known as The OM Album, has long carried the aura of a private-press treasure: gentle, mystical, melodic and slightly out of time.

Images of Life matters because it expands that story without turning it into nostalgia packaging. It gives listeners more of the path around the known record: the band attempts, the solo sketches, the lost late-1970s work and the strange persistence of an artist who never quite found a standard industry lane.
