Bristol art-rock veterans The Blue Aeroplanes have announced their fourteenth studio album Tales From the Silver Lounge, scheduled for November 27 through ArtStar Records. The announcement arrives alongside lead single "Silver Lounge", a characteristically unusual composition inspired by a painting from Scottish artist John Byrne.
Frontman Gerard Langley developed the song's fictional setting around a disreputable dockside bar existing on an imaginary planet inspired by 1950s Britain. Its clientele apparently includes characters from different galaxies and historical periods, whose conversations provide the material for the song's surreal narrative. The concept sounds like an extremely ambitious science-fiction television series that somebody accidentally converted into a punk-rock recording.
The album was recorded during two concentrated sessions at Bristol's Humm Studios, using a lineup that has remained largely unchanged for approximately fourteen years. Langley has explained that the project reflects the band's continuing confidence in their distinctive musical approach. The Blue Aeroplanes have occupied an important position within British independent music for decades, combining spoken-word delivery, unconventional arrangements and literary influences. Their catalogue received renewed attention through two Chrysalis compilations released in 2025.
The forthcoming album includes eleven tracks and will be accompanied by live appearances in London and Bristol. For listeners unfamiliar with the group, "Silver Lounge" offers an introduction to a band that has never been particularly interested in conventional rock songwriting. After fourteen albums, changing that approach now would seem unnecessarily inconvenient. Discover more experimental classics across our post-punk coverage.
