British gothic-rock and post-punk pioneers The Mission have announced Songs for Kith and Kin, their first new studio album since 2016's Another Fall from Grace. The fifteen-track collection is scheduled for worldwide release on April 2, 2027, through Cooking Vinyl, heralded by the release of lead single "Kindness Is A Weapon" and an accompanying lyric video.
Frontman and founding songwriter Wayne Hussey began drafting the material several years ago, but the album's gestation was interrupted by significant health challenges, including open-heart surgery and an extended rehabilitation period. That harrowing experience deeply informed the record's philosophical focus, steering Hussey toward themes of familial love, enduring friendship, and the urgent necessity of human empathy in an increasingly divided world.
"Kindness Is A Weapon" originated as an acoustic sketch during earlier solo dates before being fully fleshed out with the band in June 2026. The album features Hussey alongside longtime guitarist Simon Hinkler, bassist Craig Adams, and drummer Alex Baum. Primary recording took place at Faro House Studios in Uruguay, augmented by lush orchestral sessions in Montevideo incorporating sitar, tamboura, and expansive synthesizers alongside their trademark twelve-string electric chime.
Emerging from the Leeds post-punk explosion of the 1980s, The Mission built an enduring global following with classics like God's Own Medicine and Children. Their comeback proves that gothic rock need not linger solely in despair; sometimes the darkest velvet wardrobe shelters an unexpectedly compassionate heart.
