Australian songwriter and multidisciplinary performer Tomi Gray has premiered "Oh My Darling" and its wonderfully surreal accompanying video today, ahead of the single's official October 9 release. The song combines alternative folk and rock with lyrics examining the difference between understanding why somebody caused emotional pain and actually recovering from the consequences.
While the lyrical subject is introspective, Gray's visual interpretation is considerably less predictable. The video features an emu wearing a mask of his face and causing havoc across the Australian bush, transforming questions about identity and memory into something resembling a wildlife documentary directed by a mildly unhinged theatre company. Gray explains that other people carry distorted versions of us in their memories; the video makes that concept literal, with the unfortunate additional complication of a large flightless bird.
"Oh My Darling" previews forthcoming album Are We Having Fun Yet, expected in 2027. Gray's wider creative work includes music, comedy, theatre, puppetry and visual art, with his one-man production Tomi Gray's TRIP having appeared at Adelaide Fringe earlier this year. Plenty of musicians write songs about being misunderstood, but very few involve an emu in the investigation.
