Indie-rock duo Tommy Lefroy have released "Vacuum," the final preview of debut album The Precariat, arriving October 23 through Thirty Tigers. Unlike much of Tessa Mouzourakis and Wynter Bethel's songwriting, which frequently draws on outside stories, literature and cultural references, "Vacuum" is directly about the pair themselves. It looks back at starting Tommy Lefroy in London when they barely knew anybody besides one another, had very little certainty and were effectively betting everything on a project with no guarantee that anybody would care.

They describe the experience as building an empire in a vacuum, which is simultaneously romantic and an excellent summary of approximately 80 percent of independent music careers. The wider album expands that uncertainty into a social theme. The Precariat takes its title from the economic term for people living with chronic instability, examining what it means to become an adult when traditional promises of security increasingly resemble historical fiction.

Written across six years and several cities including London, Nashville, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Michigan, the record combines those broader anxieties with the duo's own friendship. "Vacuum" consequently feels like the ideal final preview: beneath the economics, literature and clever references are simply two people who decided to trust one another before there was much evidence that doing so was sensible.
