Vanessa Rossetto makes The Professional sound like travelogue, theatre and anti-career spell

Vanessa Rossetto’s The Professional is the sort of experimental album that seems to enjoy asking whether it is music, theatre, travel diary or an elaborate joke on professional seriousness. Reviewed on 9 June, the album is built from field recordings, performance fragments, overheard life and fourth-wall slippage, turning Rossetto’s European touring experience into a strange sound-collage travelogue. The fascinating part is the tension between the title and Rossetto’s position as an artist who has often operated outside conventional musicianship. The Professional sounds less like a career flex and more like a sly question: what makes someone a professional in a field that barely agrees on what counts as music? The album appears to answer by refusing a clean answer. Everyday sound becomes stage material. Introductions become structure. The world becomes a score because Rossetto keeps listening until it starts behaving like one.
