Lawrence, Kansas trio Virga have released two new tracks, "Perception Management" and "Impassable Monolith II," continuing their exploration of the territory between experimental rock, noise, heavy music and something they describe as prairie goth. The group formed in 2022 and have already released three EPs, most recently The Perfect Freedom Of Single Necessity earlier this year.

Their growing reputation has been strengthened by an opening slot on the current North American tour featuring Chat Pile and Soul Glo, placing them in front of audiences already comfortable with music that occasionally sounds like a building collapsing. "Perception Management" stretches beyond seven minutes, allowing the band to develop an atmosphere that is simultaneously beautiful, threatening and emotionally exposed.

"Impassable Monolith II" continues the approach with heavy instrumentation and a similarly uncompromising sense of scale. What makes Virga interesting is their refusal to separate vulnerability from aggression. The music can be physically overwhelming without losing its human dimension, an increasingly important distinction in experimental rock. The term prairie goth may not yet have earned its own dedicated section in most record shops, but Virga are making a persuasive argument for its existence.
