Brooklyn dream-pop outfit Whisper Doll released debut album Lucky Clover yesterday through Take Care Records, following a campaign that included the wonderfully starry-eyed single "Sunsigns." The latter captures the specific stage of a crush where rational analysis has failed and somebody has started researching astrological compatibility as though Mercury's position might provide information the other person's text messages have somehow withheld.
Vocalist Fiona described the song as being about becoming so enamoured with somebody that you start investigating their sun, moon and star signs from afar. Its accompanying video pushes that idea further through tarot-card imagery inspired by cult film The Love Witch. Musically, Whisper Doll work with glistening guitars and propulsive vocals, placing Lucky Clover inside dream-pop territory without allowing everything to dissolve into decorative haze.
That is an important distinction on a debut album. Atmosphere can attract listeners, but personality is what gives them a reason to remember which band produced it. Whisper Doll's combination of romantic obsession, playful mysticism and melodic guitar music gives the group a recognisable identity from the beginning. Lucky Clover may concern the search for signs that love will work out. Releasing your first album into the indie-music wilderness arguably requires approximately the same level of faith.
