Xiu Xiu turn David Lynch’s Eraserhead into a new album

Xiu Xiu announced Eraserhead Xiu Xiu on 19 May, a new album based on their ongoing live performance project inspired by David Lynch’s cult film Eraserhead. The record is due 10 July via Polyvinyl and continues the band’s long relationship with Lynchian sound worlds after their earlier Twin Peaks project.

The concept draws from the original score and sound design by Lynch and Alan Splet, which makes perfect sense for Xiu Xiu. Few experimental rock acts are better suited to turning dread, intimacy, industrial texture and damaged beauty into a musical language. The announcement also came with Xiu Xiu’s version of In Heaven, the haunting song from Eraserhead originally composed by Peter Ivers with lyrics by Lynch. Jamie Stewart and Angela Seo’s interpretation fits into the band’s long history of treating covers and reinterpretations not as easy tribute exercises, but as ways of entering another artist’s psychic architecture.

The album includes seven pieces, and a film companion is also reportedly in the works. For an indie music digest, this is one of the strongest 19 May stories because it connects underground cinema, experimental music, performance art and horror atmosphere in a way that feels completely natural for Xiu Xiu.
