Lancaster, Pennsylvania noise-rock band American Motors have released "Marlboro Miles", another preview of forthcoming album Functional Music, scheduled for November 6 through The Ghost Is Clear, Expert Work and Vina. The record was produced with J Robbins, whose work with influential alternative-rock band Jawbox makes him an appropriate collaborator for musicians interested in noisy guitars and unconventional arrangements.

"Marlboro Miles" follows earlier single "No Horses" and demonstrates the band's preference for tense rhythms, abrasive textures and songwriting that refuses to behave according to ordinary commercial expectations. The new track deliberately avoids a conventional chorus, instead developing its atmosphere through repetition, distortion and an almost conversational vocal delivery.

Band member Dustin White explains that the song was partly inspired by a photograph he discovered years ago showing a woman surrounded by cigarette-company promotional coupons. The image disappeared during subsequent moves, but apparently remained sufficiently memorable to inspire an entire composition. The lyrics also reference a science-fiction convention in Columbus, Ohio, where White recalls witnessing an unlikely romantic encounter between costumed characters. These seemingly unrelated memories combine into a song that captures the strange personal associations attached to ordinary objects and experiences. Amanda Lee McCarty directed the accompanying music video.

American Motors have developed a musical identity that values atmosphere and unpredictability over immediate accessibility. Functional Music promises to continue that approach, although the title may be somewhat misleading. This is unlikely to become the preferred soundtrack for a relaxing afternoon of household administration, as detailed in our ongoing indie rock coverage.
