London-based multidisciplinary artist anaiis and acclaimed filmmaker Tayo Rapoport have announced devotion, an immersive multimedia performance scheduled for November 22 at London's Barbican Conservatory. The event will be the final public performance held in the distinctive glass indoor garden before a comprehensive three-year architectural restoration programme begins in early 2027.
Rather than presenting a conventional stage concert, the collaborators are developing an environmental experience combining live music, multi-channel film, ritual movement and spatial sound. The project expands upon the artistic themes explored in anaiis' 2025 album Devotion & The Black Divine, connecting its R&B/soul and spiritual foundations with visual storytelling and natural ecosystems.
A two-channel film created by anaiis and Rapoport examines the relationship between Black women, spiritual transcendence and the Jamaican landscape. The performance will also incorporate field recordings captured in a lush forest near Portland, Jamaica, with musicians and live performers responding to those natural acoustics throughout the multi-tiered Conservatory terraces. Tickets went on general sale on October 30 at 10am.
For independent musicians, devotion provides an inspiring example of how recorded album material can evolve into a transformative, place-based artistic ritual. Most contemporary concerts require musicians to compete with audience members checking their phones under festival floodlights. Anaiis has instead chosen to perform inside an enormous tropical greenhouse, which seems like a considerably more rewarding solution. Check our ambient music hub for related sonic explorations.
