French folk singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Anso Baya has announced her debut full-length album Watch the Stars, scheduled for release on February 26, 2027, via Scarlight Records, the independent imprint she established earlier this year. The title track has arrived across streaming platforms alongside a breathtaking music video helmed by director Antoine Bal.
The eight-composition LP undertakes an intimate investigation of the psychological ripples left by the passing of her father, delving into unasked questions, filial duty, and the bittersweet nature of long-term memory. Rather than assembling a collection of generic bereavement ballads, Baya approached the material as an inquiry into how loss permanently reconfigures one's relationship to time. The sequence features "The Light", "Watch the Stars", "Gold", "Downtown", "Desire", "Tiptoes", "Peace", and "Lift Your Eyes".
Baya authored every track and produced the majority of the sessions herself, enlisting drummer Kevin Lika and guitarist Franck Claudel, with seasoned American drummer Brian Griffin guesting on "Peace". Romain Dupont handled mixing duties, with final mastering completed at Paris's legendary Translab by Alex Gopher. Notably, centerpiece "Gold" stretches past six minutes, defying commercial radio brevity to allow its intricate narrative arc to fully unfold.
Baya's decision to self-release via Scarlight Records highlights the entrepreneurial determination of contemporary European folk artists. Instead of waiting for label executives to evaluate personal grief, she took full ownership of her artistic vision. Meaningful songwriting rarely adheres to industry deadlines.
