Colombian psychedelic trio BALTHVS release Manifest today through Mixto Records, an eleven-track fifth album shaped both by life on the road and a retreat to a rural studio outside Bogotá. Guitarist-producer Balthazar Aguirre, bassist Johanna Mercuriana and drummer Santiago Lizcano have built a sizeable international audience by treating psychedelic music as a borderless language rather than a museum exhibit, and Manifest expands that idea considerably.
Familiar hypnotic grooves remain, but the record wanders into drum and bass, disco, trip-hop, Ethio-jazz and a heavier rock attack without sounding like somebody accidentally changed playlists halfway through the session. The album also marks Mercuriana's return after stepping away from touring following the birth of her first child, something the band describes as sparking a fresh creative period.
Tracks including "Liminal Stages," "Rare Psalms," "Eternal Flow," "Pale Blue Dot," "Flesh and Soul" and "Kilig" reveal a group increasingly confident that psychedelia does not require remaining stylistically parked in 1971. Manifest is available digitally alongside limited vinyl and cassette editions, with a North American tour following immediately. Apparently cosmic funk travels perfectly well with luggage.
