Baxter Dury’s Allbarone Versions announcement is exactly the sort of remix news that makes sense once you imagine Dury’s deadpan delivery wandering into a nightclub at 2:17 AM and pretending it came for the architecture. The digital EP, due 24 July via Heavenly, features five Paul Epworth extended versions of tracks from Allbarone, including the newly available Alpha Dog remix. Epworth reportedly rebuilds the material as 12-inch-style electro-disco workouts, adding dub echoes, percussion flickers, basslines and small-hours momentum. That is a clever move because Dury’s music already lives between spoken character study, louche pop and social discomfort. Stretching it toward the dancefloor gives the songs more room to misbehave. Allbarone Versions sounds like the afterparty version of a very dry joke: still elegant, still strange, now with better bass.
