Graham Hill, longtime touring and studio drummer for acclaimed dream-pop group Beach House, has announced his debut solo album Taking In Stars, scheduled for January 22, 2027. The announcement arrives alongside "Monster In My Head", a warm folk-rock recording that introduces a musical identity quite different from the lush, keyboard-drenched soundscapes associated with his established band.
Hill drew inspiration from a late-night conversation with his teenage son, who was struggling to sleep because racing thoughts and fragments of music repeatedly occupied his mind. The experience resonated with Hill's own tendency toward chronic overthinking and provided the foundation for a song about anxiety, uncertainty and the exhausting activity of an overactive imagination. Taking In Stars was co-produced with Donald Markowitz, whose previous production credits include collaborations with Van Morrison, Taj Mahal and Dr. John.
Additional musicians contributing to the recording include guitarist Shane Theriot and blues performer Gabe Stillman. The ten-track album features compositions including "Better Ways", "Your Own River", "Gravel Ghost", "Heart Like the Sun" and "Wrong Place Saloon", with guest vocal appearances from Tif Lamson and phin. Hill's transition from drummer to frontman represents an intriguing development, reminding listeners that rhythm-section players frequently nurture expansive songwriting identities outside their primary ensembles.
"Monster In My Head" suggests a songwriter comfortable with intimate storytelling and traditional American musical roots. Apparently spending years creating dream-pop does not necessarily guarantee peaceful dreams, particularly when your brain insists on organising an unsolicited midnight concert.
