Belgian experimental-pop collaborators Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul have announced Mainland Madinina, their second collaborative album, scheduled for February 5, 2027 through DEEWEE and Because Music. The announcement, reported on November 6 at 15:00, introduces new single "From Healer to Dealer" and marks a return to the sharp electronic storytelling that helped establish their reputation with 2022's Topical Dancer.
The new single imagines a conversation between Grace and Ruben, two characters whose obsession with wellness provides an opportunity to examine fashionable self-improvement culture and its increasingly commercial vocabulary. Beyond its satire, Mainland Madinina explores more personal territory, including parenthood, family history and colonial heritage. Both musicians became parents following their previous album. Adigéry also experienced the loss of her father, while Pupul's earlier solo work examined his maternal family connections to Hong Kong.
The album title connects Pupul's family history in mainland China and Hong Kong with Madinina, the name of Adigéry's mother's cocktail bar in Ghent. The musicians also drew inspiration from the similarities between that bar and the Chinese restaurant operated by Pupul's grandparents. Written in Ghent and Martinique, the twelve-track album was co-produced by Soulwax. A twenty-two-date international tour is planned across Europe, Britain and America, with tickets going on sale November 13.
The project promises an unusually rich combination of dance-floor energy, cultural reflection and humour. Apparently the modern wellness industry has finally inspired a treatment that might actually work: a sharply observed electronic-pop song.
