Duval Timothy and Carlos Niño make weather-like music on Rain Music

Duval Timothy and Carlos Niño’s Rain Music is one of the most beautiful instrumental records to carry through the 24 May weekend. Released on 22 May through Carrying Colour and CNF, the album began with prepared piano and percussion in Timothy’s South London studio, then expanded across distance with contributions from artists including Navy Blue, Laraaji, Nate Mercereau, Michael Alvidrez, Darius Jones and Aaron Shaw.

That origin explains the record’s loose, weather-like feel. It does not sound like a rigidly plotted album. It gathers, shifts, brightens, softens and moves on. Timothy’s work often feels painterly and spacious, while Niño has a gift for building musical communities that feel open rather than crowded. Together, they create a record that seems to breathe through objects, rain, bells, keys, shells, wood, metal and touch.
