Chicago indie-rock quintet Edens have released "Metal Egg", the third advance single from their forthcoming debut album Static Fiction, which arrives October 23 through independent label Dedd Foxx. The new recording received its official premiere on October 19 and offers another compelling introduction to a group combining atmospheric guitar arrangements with an affection for the stranger corners of American alternative rock.

The nine-track album was recorded at Chicago's Jamdek Studios with engineer Mike Lust and explores memory, nostalgia and uncertainty through what the musicians describe as a surreal Midwestern perspective. "Metal Egg" draws inspiration from Belgian surrealist René Magritte's 1931 painting La Voix des airs, which depicts enormous spherical bells suspended mysteriously above a rural landscape. Musically, the composition combines the delicate post-punk guitar textures associated with The Durutti Column and the hypnotic rhythmic repetition of German Krautrock.

Edens feature vocalist and guitarist Jonathan Burden, drummer Pete Gray, bassist Crawfie Ward, guitarist Josh Shell and keyboardist Adam Penly. Their collective musical histories include deep connections with Tiger Bones, Laureates, Reserver and several other independent projects across the Chicago underground. Burden describes Static Fiction as an important creative statement reflecting both the band's accumulated experience and its ambitions for the future.

Vinyl collectors should note that the album's initial physical pressing is limited to just 150 copies pressed in assorted colours. A hometown release celebration is scheduled for November 13 at Chicago's legendary Gman Tavern, with Palace Guard and Wet Chain providing support. Edens apparently believe the best response to an increasingly predictable music industry is to create something inspired by floating metal bells. Frankly, that sounds considerably more interesting than another song about somebody not answering their telephone.
