New Jersey underground rapper and producer GDP has released "Mezzanine", the final advance single from his forthcoming album Cross Off Matthew, scheduled for October 23 through Run For Cover Records. The project represents his first proper solo album since 2013's Holla, ending a lengthy absence from the format that originally helped establish his reputation within independent hip-hop.
GDP returned to recording under his established name in 2025 with ENDOCRINE, a collaborative mini-album featuring Fatboi Sharif, but Cross Off Matthew marks a more comprehensive personal statement. "Mezzanine" was produced using a Roland SP-404 sampler and material sourced from an old Japanese flute recording, demonstrating the artist's continuing enthusiasm for unconventional musical ingredients.
The accompanying video was filmed at his childhood home, which suffered a devastating fire earlier this year. Rather than avoiding the damaged building, GDP incorporated its remains into a visual exploration of memory, personal transformation and the complicated process of moving forward. The twelve-track album is entirely self-produced and includes compositions such as "Another Country", "Seroquel", "Island in the Sky", "Location Therapy" and "Doom Loop".
A release celebration is scheduled for October 25 at Crossroads in Garwood, New Jersey, followed by Australian performances in November and another American concert in December. GDP's return illustrates the continuing importance of independent hip-hop as a platform for musicians whose artistic ambitions extend beyond conventional commercial expectations. There is something rather appropriate about an artist using an old sampler, an obscure flute record and the remains of a childhood home to explain how life changes.
