Berlin veterans Golden Apes receive a substantial new spotlight today for twelfth studio album The Sun Came Up Tremendously, originally released September 18 through Icy Cold Records. So no, the album did not magically come out twice; today's story is fresh coverage of a record deserving a little more daylight.

Across ten tracks including "Farewell," "The Light (Inside Us)," "Milk And Poison," "Resistance," "Where The River Ran" and "Dreams (Gone By)," Golden Apes move between post-punk, darkwave, gothic rock, dream pop and alternative rock with the confidence of musicians who have been occupying this territory for more than twenty years. The lineage is audible — The Cure, The Chameleons, Clan of Xymox and Cocteau Twins are useful reference points — but the album does not sound like somebody painstakingly reconstructing an old goth-club playlist. Peer Lebrecht's baritone remains a strong centre while guitars and synthesizers alternately close in and open the music outward.

The band have shared stages with everyone from The Chameleons and Pink Turns Blue to She Past Away and Whispering Sons, bridging generations of dark alternative music. Twelve albums in, Golden Apes have discovered something surprisingly radical for goth: the sun. Nobody panic.
