Washington D.C. goth-rock outfit Winter Sect release "Graveyard Girl" today, a new single from forthcoming EP Offering that discovers an unexpectedly effective connection between post-punk gloom, funk bass, garage grit, indie-pop hooks and a touch of bossa nova. The track began during rehearsal setup when bassist Claudia Neuman started playing a groove and singer-keyboardist Heather Wayward decided the band should make something less serious and macabre than usual.
Naturally, her imagination immediately wandered into a graveyard, proving that goth musicians can lighten up only within clearly defined limits. The song follows "Say Goodbye" and represents a more playful side of a group formed in late 2023 by Neuman and guitarist Anthony Piazza, both previously involved with D.C./Baltimore post-punk band Sister Ex. Wayward and drummer Darryl J. Dardenne complete the lineup.
Winter Sect's broader sound encompasses goth, new wave, industrial, psychedelia and feedback-heavy rock, but "Graveyard Girl" demonstrates why rigid genre definitions are rarely much fun: a funk groove and bossa rhythm can apparently coexist quite happily beside tombstones. Offering does not yet need to reveal all its secrets. This single has already proved the graveyard has a dance floor.
