Gorillaz turn Tottenham into The Mountain’s cartoon borderland

Gorillaz hit Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 20 June, and it is hard to imagine a more appropriate setting for a band that has spent its career making the fictional feel enormous and the enormous feel weirdly personal. The show forms part of The Mountain Tour, with Sparks and Trueno listed as support, and the wider guest chatter has only made the event feel more like a pop-cultural summit than a normal stadium concert. Gorillaz have always operated like a switchboard: dub, hip-hop, indie, electronic, art-pop, cartoons and melancholy all patched into one unruly machine. A stadium show risks flattening that strangeness, but Gorillaz are one of the rare acts built to survive scale because the project was never simply four people in a room. It was always a world.
