Gorillaz turn one London stadium show into a guest-list small country

Gorillaz have never been shy about building a universe instead of just a band, but the 15 June announcement of 23 guest performers for their Tottenham Hotspur Stadium show turns even their usual collaborative chaos into something enormous. Little Simz, Johnny Marr, Black Thought, De La Soul, Yasiin Bey, Paul Simonon, Shaun Ryder, Anoushka Shankar, Fatoumata Diawara, Omar Souleyman and many more are set to join Damon Albarn’s animated empire on 20 June. This is not just guest-star decoration. Gorillaz have always worked because the project behaves like a cultural switchboard, connecting hip-hop, dub, indie, electronic, global pop and cartoon melancholy under one strange roof. Their first stadium headline show in London feels like a milestone because the fictional band has become a very real live institution. Apparently, the cartoon has outgrown the screen again.
