Guided By Voices prove the factory still has electricity

Guided By Voices releasing another album is less a surprise than a weather pattern. Still, Crawlspace Of The Pantheon, out on 29 May via GBV Inc Records, deserves more than a casual nod. The band’s astonishing productivity can sometimes distract from the actual songs, but that is also part of the mythology. Robert Pollard has made a career out of treating hooks like strange little objects found in the basement, polished just enough to shine but never too much to lose their odd shape. This new album continues that cult-indie tradition: compact songs, surreal titles, classic guitar energy and the sense that Guided By Voices are always building their own private rock universe one two-minute transmission at a time. For longtime fans, it is another chapter in a story that somehow keeps expanding. For newcomers, it is a reminder that indie rock does not always need to be precious, polished or algorithm-friendly.
