Melbourne trio Jacobs Run have taken the phrase 'add some strings' rather more seriously than most bands on new single "How Does It Feel (One More Time)." The third preview of forthcoming second album The Other Side begins in familiar melodic indie-rock territory before expanding into an arrangement involving a thirty-two-piece orchestra and brass ensemble, eventually finishing with the sound of a crowd joining what resembles a musical street procession.

Producer Mark Opitz, whose Australian rock CV includes work with Cold Chisel, INXS, The Angels, Divinyls and Australian Crawl, oversees the escalation. It is the sort of arrangement that could easily become an expensive exercise in demonstrating how many people fit in a studio, but Jacobs Run use the additional instrumentation structurally, allowing the song to grow from intimate band performance into something deliberately communal.

That transformation fits an indie scene increasingly willing to borrow orchestral scale without sacrificing melodic directness. The single also provides a useful reminder that 'independent rock' describes a business ecosystem and creative attitude rather than a legal requirement to own exactly two guitars and one slightly unreliable van. By the end of "How Does It Feel," Jacobs Run have effectively invited half the neighbourhood into the arrangement. Nobody appears to have complained.
