Philadelphia six-piece Knifeplay have announced third album What Is Truth?, due January 22, 2027 through Double Double Whammy, and introduced it with the magnificently unhurried ten-minute "Love Song." Anybody concerned that contemporary music has become too obsessed with reaching the hook within twelve seconds may consider this a small act of resistance.

Tj Strohmer and Johanna Baumann place intertwined vocals and acoustic guitar at the centre while electric guitars gradually expand around them, moving the band toward slowcore and folk without entirely abandoning the shoegaze atmosphere associated with earlier records. What Is Truth? runs close to eighty minutes across twelve tracks and is Knifeplay's first album since 2022's Animal Drowning. Strohmer and Baumann recorded across three Philadelphia studios, with arrangements also incorporating keys, strings, flute, French horn and mellotron.

"Love Song" begins with damage rather than romance, asking whether imperfect people can truly rescue one another before arriving somewhere gentler: perhaps rescue is too ambitious, but companionship still matters. It is an unusually patient opening statement for a new album campaign. Fortunately, Knifeplay appear to have remembered that streaming platforms do actually allow songs longer than three minutes.
