Cult indie-rock favourites Krill are properly back. The Boston-born band have announced their new album, Secret Language, arriving November 13 through Exploding In Sound, and today they have delivered its latest preview, 'Dominate'. Krill originally broke up in 2015 before sporadic reunions and side projects kept the friendships alive, but this new chapter sounds considerably more substantial than a nostalgia exercise.
'Dominate' begins with the sort of twitchy, thoughtful guitar rock that first built the group's reputation before steadily turning the emotional screws. The song looks at growing up in America during the 1990s and 2000s, drawing an uneasy line between competitive childhood culture, basketball mythology and the country's post-9/11 appetite for military dominance. That is quite a journey for one scrappy indie song, but Krill have never been particularly interested in taking the straight road.
Secret Language contains nine tracks, including comeback single 'Commemorative Plaque', and marks the band's first full album since reforming around Jonah Furman and Ian Becker with Andrew Clinkman joining the current lineup. For fans of cerebral independent guitar rock, ten years after their initial disappearance, Krill have apparently decided unfinished business makes excellent fuel.
