Little Barrie freeze gravity and let the groove do the talking

Little Barrie’s Gravity Freeze is a reminder that groove can be a form of restraint. Released on 5 June, the album finds Barrie Cadogan’s long-running project continuing its evolution from garage-rock roots into a hazier, more rhythm-driven psych-funk zone. Cadogan’s guitar playing has always been a point of interest, especially given his work with major names outside the band, but Gravity Freeze does not sound like a vanity vehicle for technique. It sounds more collaborative and mood-led than that. The songs seem to favour feel over fireworks, spectral blues over straight revivalism and atmosphere over obvious hooks. That is what makes the record useful in today’s indie-rock landscape. It does not try to cosplay the past. It channels old forms through a looser, stranger modern filter. Gravity Freeze is music for listeners who know that sometimes the best riff is the one that refuses to show off.
