Philadelphia songwriter Mallory Hawk releases her self-produced debut album ‘Chinook’ on 31 July. The title comes from the military helicopters that formed a constant background hum during her childhood in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Across tracks such as ‘Revolver’, ‘Caretaker’, ‘Four O’Clocks’ and ‘Felicity’, Hawk explores burnout, loyalty, survival and the relationships that help pull somebody out of creative exhaustion.
Her music combines jangling guitars, warm distortion and songwriting that turns personal history into something both intimate and muscular. Hawk has previously played in Customer, Trace Mountains and M(h)aol, but ‘Chinook’ places her own perspective fully at the controls. Childhood sounds have a habit of remaining inside the head.
