Sukita’s career includes a forty-four-year creative relationship with David Bowie and the portrait used for the iconic ‘Heroes’ album cover, along with photographs of Iggy Pop, Marc Bolan, Joe Strummer, Yellow Magic Orchestra and David Sylvian.
His images did more than document musicians standing in attractive clothing. They shaped how entire generations visualised those artists, proving that a photograph can become inseparable from the sound it represents. Sukita is only the second recipient of the award, following David Bailey.
Music photography often performs an impossible task: capturing movement, identity and mythology inside one frozen frame. Sukita repeatedly made that task look natural. The award recognises a lifetime of work, although his influence had already been hanging on bedroom walls, gallery walls and record shelves for decades.
