Matthew Herbert and Momoko Gill reshape Clay with bonus-room fingerprints

Matthew Herbert and Momoko Gill’s Clay (Bonus Edition) arrives on 24 June through Strut Records, and the title still feels perfect for Herbert’s world. Clay is material to be shaped, pressed, marked and remade, which is more or less how Herbert has always treated sound. His best work turns the ordinary object into a musical problem and the musical problem into something weirdly intimate. With Momoko Gill in the frame, Clay carries a more voice-and-body-centred warmth, allowing electronic process to meet performance rather than simply display cleverness. A bonus edition can sometimes feel like a content dump, but with Herbert the expanded format also invites listeners to hear the working surface: extra fingerprints, alternate angles, the material still soft enough to hold another mark. This is electronic music as craft table, studio experiment and tactile conversation.
