Producer, vocalist, linguist and visual artist megiapa releases Intentions, her International Anthem debut and an absorbing forty-minute journey through jazz-informed neo-soul, beat music, psychedelia and electronic experimentation. Born in Ohio, shaped by Chicago's underground beat scene and now based in Los Angeles, megiapa has spent years developing a musical language in which warm synthesizers, elastic bass, voice recordings and spiritual jazz can coexist without anyone demanding to see their genre passports.
The album developed across approximately five years marked by the pandemic, the end of a long relationship and a move away from Chicago. Rather than documenting that upheaval chronologically, Intentions functions more like an emotional map of recovery, fear, uncertainty and ambition. "Open Your Eyes" introduces the project, while "Dreaming About You" revisits The Blackbyrds and "Black Gold of the Sun" interprets the Rotary Connection song associated with Charles Stepney's expansive Chicago sound.
Contributors across the record include Mekala Session, Will Miller, Telemakus and others, but megiapa remains producer and central architect. Even the artwork and photography are hers. Intentions is therefore less a conventional debut than a carefully assembled creative universe. Apparently merely writing, producing and singing an album was insufficient; the sensible solution was to build the planet around it too.
