Australian singer-songwriter folk-rock stalwart Mick Thomas has announced a new split single with Melbourne duo Hana and Jessie-Lee's Bad Habits, revisiting a song that originally appeared during the final chapter of his influential folk-rock band Weddings Parties Anything. The release pairs Thomas's "(Still) Don't Need Much" with "Somebody's Fool" from Hana and Jessie-Lee's Bad Habits. It arrives November 2, with preorders already available and additional live recordings included in the package.
The project developed from an unexpectedly emotional encounter at a desert music festival. Thomas met a listener who had tattooed lyrics from "Don't Need Much" onto his arm in memory of his late wife. The conversation encouraged the musician to reconsider a composition that had largely disappeared from his live repertoire after its original release in 1996.
Thomas subsequently returned to the song with his current Roving Commission lineup, creating a new recording that reconnects the original material with his present musical identity. The split single also reflects an established relationship with Hana and Jessie-Lee's Bad Habits, who shared performances with Thomas during 2025. Four additional live recordings capture moments from those collaborations, including interpretations of "For a Short Time" and David McComb's "Wide Open Road".
The release coincides with Thomas's forthcoming GoChristmasComeBack tour, beginning November 6 in Castlemaine and continuing across Australia. Independent music frequently produces stories about songs being rediscovered through streaming algorithms or anniversary reissues. This one began with a tattoo, a conversation and the realisation that a supposedly forgotten composition had remained deeply important to somebody else, as celebrated across our folk and acoustic hub.
