Los Angeles punk-rock band Niis have released "No Flowers," the second taste of forthcoming EP Play Niis, due October 23 through Rise Records. The track follows "Earthquakes," their label debut, and finds the band pushing against social expectations with the sort of compact aggression that makes punk considerably more useful than another politely worded opinion column.
Niis — pronounced 'Nice', because punk bands are permitted at least one piece of administrative mischief — have built their reputation around direct, physical songs and an equally energetic live presence. "No Flowers" keeps that identity intact despite the move to a larger label platform. That is significant because signing can sometimes produce the peculiar phenomenon of a rough-edged band suddenly sounding as though every guitar has undergone professional dental cleaning. Niis retain the grit.
The accompanying video adds another visual layer to the song's refusal to conform, while the October EP gives "Earthquakes" and "No Flowers" a clear destination. The band's upcoming touring activity should also place these songs where they make the most sense: in crowded rooms rather than isolated streaming tiles. Rise Records provides a larger megaphone, but "No Flowers" suggests Niis have not mistaken increased reach for a requirement to become polite. Very considerate of them.
