Sheffield hardcore punks Rat Cage announce their third album ‘Not Asking For Much’, arriving on 28 August, and launch it with the wonderfully urgent ‘Steady On Now’. The track begins with a brief anthemic introduction before charging forward at the musical equivalent of somebody discovering the last bus is already closing its doors.
Across ten tracks, the album promises pounding drums, rollercoaster riffs and Bry Suddaby’s barked observations on surviving a world that has not become noticeably calmer since the band’s earlier releases. Titles including ‘Dragged Through The Dirt’, ‘Spiders In A Jar’ and ‘Scared Stiff’ suggest the emotional wellness retreat has been cancelled. Rat Cage draw from raw early-eighties punk without sounding like historical reconstruction. The music is too immediate, cynical and sweaty for that. They are not asking for much—only survival, momentum and possibly stronger venue flooring. Read more hardcore updates in our Punk News section.
