Atlanta electronic producer Nikki Nair has announced Majestic Animals, a four-track EP arriving October 16 through Hyperdub, and introduced it with the delightfully unpredictable "Groundhogs." Nair has become an increasingly interesting presence in underground dance music through collaborations with Hudson Mohawke, the Avalanches and Japanese producer Foodman.

Earlier this year he also released The Sick Dimension through dh2, the electronic imprint associated with Dirty Hit. Majestic Animals marks his first solo release on Hyperdub, following last year's collaborative Nagoya project with Foodman. Every track on the new EP takes its name from an animal, with "Groundhogs" joined by "Tapir Spectrum," "Primate Indicator" and "Walrus2." Nair explains that he was thinking about these creatures while making the music and believes the record would work particularly well while observing animals.

"Groundhogs" itself is a restless instrumental built around bouncing rhythms and percussion that seems determined to arrive from several directions simultaneously. The EP demonstrates Nair's ability to combine complex electronic production with a sense of humour often missing from technically ambitious dance records. Whether actual groundhogs appreciate the arrangement remains unconfirmed, but club audiences have plenty of reason to celebrate.
