Andrew Savage has introduced another musical identity, launching Iconic Fugues with debut single "2025 Dream/2025 Blues." The Parquet Courts musician has already established a distinctive solo catalogue under the name A. Savage, but this new project is deliberately presented as a band rather than another extension of his individual work. Now based in Marseille, France, Savage has assembled a group including drummer Dylan Hadley and Santiago Aldunate of psychedelic outfit Hantayo.
Their first release combines two connected lyrical pieces into a continuous six-minute folk-rock composition. The song follows a character awakening from a dream only to encounter an increasingly unpleasant sequence of everyday realities. Savage describes the grievances as ranging from minor annoyances to considerably more serious concerns, although he insists the result is not necessarily pessimistic. A well-placed guitar solo apparently remains capable of improving almost any situation.
The project also has a debut album called Sister Uncertain in preparation, although a confirmed release date has not yet been announced. Savage's relocation from New York to Marseille has clearly provided fresh creative perspective. Iconic Fugues sound interested in combining personal observation, social discomfort and the loose chemistry of musicians playing together. The result is a promising beginning for a band whose name suggests classical sophistication but whose first song is gloriously uninterested in behaving itself.
