Racing To Red Lights make Trojan Whores feel like a math-rock argument with the walls

Racing To Red Lights’ Trojan Whores arrives on 6 June with a title that is clearly not trying to make the record easy to file next to polite indie releases. The Edmonton project tags the album around alternative, alternative rock, math rock, post-hardcore and space rock, which points toward something angular, tense and restless. The credits place Rhine James-Reese at the centre on vocals, guitars and bass, with Conor Wharton handling production, mixing, engineering, programming and mastering. That concentrated setup gives the album the feeling of a personal system pushed into overload. Math rock can sometimes become a clean technical display, but Trojan Whores sounds more interesting when thought of as frustration given odd time signatures and sharp elbows. This is indie-adjacent guitar music with pressure in the pipes: weird, confrontational and not particularly interested in asking for permission.
