Rafael Aragon turns Palitos de Madera Negra into reptilian dub dreamwork

Rafael Aragon’s Palitos de Madera Negra comes from Otrovertido, released on 10 June through Reptilian Business Records, and the label’s identity is half the fun here. The French imprint describes itself around hybridisation of genres and cultures, organic and electronic sounds, dancing and dreaming. Palitos de Madera Negra fits that description beautifully. The track moves through ambient, bass music, downtempo, dubstep and psychedelic territory, suggesting a piece that does not want to choose between body movement and inner cinema. The title, which translates roughly to little sticks of black wood, gives the music an earthy, tactile image before the electronics start warping the room. This is independent electronic music with a strong sense of texture: not just a beat, not just ambience, but a little strange ecosystem of rhythm, wood, shadow and reptile heat.
