Bengaluru progressive-rock trio Rainburn have reached the scheduled release date of thirty-seven, their third studio album and an ambitious nine-track conceptual collection inspired by frontman Vats Iyengar's near-death experience at sea. The recording follows earlier albums Insignify and Vignettes, introducing a darker and more experimental direction for a group established within India's independent progressive-rock community.
Iyengar developed the album after becoming stranded at sea, an experience that forced him to reconsider human confidence, technological achievement and the uncomfortable reality of being powerless against natural forces. The resulting compositions explore mortality, faith, love and humanity's tendency to assume that scientific progress has somehow eliminated the fundamental uncertainties of existence. Musically, Rainburn combine progressive guitar arrangements with industrial rhythms, synthesizers, electronic sampling and exposed acoustic instrumentation.
The contrast between these elements reflects the album's central philosophical ideas, with electronic textures representing human invention and acoustic guitar symbolising the continuing power of nature. The nine compositions include "capsize", "god", "desolation", "defy", "kings", "you", "confessions", "nearer" and "hereafter". Rainburn produced the album themselves, with recording and mixing completed at Octavium Music Academy. Iyengar performs vocals, guitar, bass and synthesizers alongside drummer Neilroy Miranda and guitarist Saakallya Biswas.
The group's Bandcamp page confirms November 4 as the intended release date, although it still displayed preorder wording during verification. The complete album is designed for uninterrupted listening. Apparently a frightening experience involving the ocean can provide enough material for an ambitious progressive-rock record, although most musicians would probably prefer a less dramatic source of inspiration.
