South London alternative-rock collective Ugly have released their long-gestating debut album, The South Facade, crowning an impressive creative evolution that began within the capital's thriving underground guitar circuit. While the ensemble have shared stages for years, this nine-song LP represents their first complete artistic manifesto.
Having outgrown early comparisons to post-punk and angular indie rock, Ugly now deploy an expansive musical vocabulary that embraces 1970s progressive rock, jazz fusion, elaborate six-part vocal counterpoint, and shifting time signatures. Highlights like "Die Another Day" and "Wasteland" exhibit a group capable of technical acrobatics while maintaining infectious hooks.
Their 2023 EP Twice Around The Sun foreshadowed this ambitious route, but The South Facade realises the vision on a grand scale. Ugly stand at the forefront of a UK indie generation unafraid to draw inspiration from once-derided prog textures and turn them into compelling modern art.
The band's name might be Ugly, but their sonic architecture is breathtakingly beautiful. Discover more boundary-pushing British acts across our indie rock section and check our news coverage.
