Brooklyn post-punk band SAVAK are marking ten years with "Door Deals And Debt: An Essential Collection From The First 10 Years", a fourteen-track compilation scheduled for October 23 through Peculiar Works alongside Ernest Jenning Record Co. Rather than assembling a straightforward greatest-hits package — always a slightly optimistic phrase for a post-punk band — the collection pulls material from across SAVAK's seven studio albums and mixes familiar songs with deeper cuts.

Eli Kasan of Pittsburgh band The Gotobeds contributed liner notes and was invited to suggest tracks, although he has joked that only four of his selections actually survived the democratic process. That detail alone makes the compilation feel appropriately like a real band project rather than something produced by spreadsheet. SAVAK's decade has been characterised by a particularly durable strain of guitar music: politically alert without becoming homework, melodic without sanding away its rougher edges, and productive enough to generate seven albums while many bands are still deciding which photograph should accompany their second single.

The new collection gives newcomers an unusually convenient entrance and existing listeners a chance to argue about omissions, which is of course the sacred purpose of every retrospective album. "Door Deals And Debt" is a suitably unromantic title for ten years in independent music, where the glamorous mythology generally ends somewhere between loading amplifiers and calculating whether tonight's merchandise sales will cover petrol.
