Seattle four-piece Scarves have shared 'Strays Forever', the title track from their fourth album, due on 18 September through Tender Loving Empire in indie rock.
Produced by former Death Cab for Cutie guitarist Chris Walla at Hall of Justice, the record marks the first time Scarves have handed full production responsibility to somebody outside the band. The resulting sessions encouraged a more spontaneous and experimental approach, incorporating live takes, strings, flute, manipulated tape and even Speak & Spell toys processed through electronic equipment.
The album began as an idea for a musical before evolving into a looser concept record about a couple negotiating grief, anxiety and the possibility of building a future together. Its central question concerns how people preserve faith after years of disappointment and interrupted plans. Scarves have spent years working through Seattle’s all-ages DIY network, and 'Strays Forever' sounds positioned to transform that accumulated experience into their most ambitious statement.
