serpentwithfeet has signed to One Little Independent Records and announced the Sentinel EP, due December 4, opening the new chapter with its title track. The move follows nearly a decade associated with Secretly Canadian and arrives after 2024 album GRIP and its expanded GRIP SEQUEL.
"Sentinel" draws on gospel roots and the communal character of sea shanties while examining masculinity, hierarchy, submission and the ways power can become entangled with erotic desire. Those are substantial ideas for one song, but serpentwithfeet has never been particularly interested in treating intimacy as lightweight material. The EP will contain seven tracks, including a collaboration with TYGAPAW on "Puckish."
The release also coincides with a striking live performance created for newly launched nature-based platform FERN, which filmed serpentwithfeet performing "Sentinel" in a wooded landscape. He described the environment as providing its own natural reverb and delay, which sounds suspiciously like the cheapest and most beautiful effects unit available. The label change makes this more than an isolated single: Sentinel represents a genuine reset in infrastructure as well as sound for experimental R&B.
