London alternative-rock group The Golden Dregs have announced their fifth studio album UK Gothic, scheduled for January 29, 2027 through Joy of Life International. The announcement accompanies new single "Real Thing", which received its premiere through BBC Radio 6 Music. The composition was co-written with Tim Wheeler of Ash and introduces a more energetic musical direction for the group.
Led by Benjamin Woods, The Golden Dregs have developed a reputation for atmospheric songwriting influenced by gothic rock, alternative folk and British independent music traditions. Their forthcoming album represents an important development following their departure from a previous label and the establishment of a new relationship with Joy of Life International, an imprint connected with End of the Road Records.
Rather than spending months constructing elaborate studio arrangements, the musicians learned and recorded the entire album live over approximately three days. Woods has explained that many performances were captured after the group had played individual compositions only a handful of times. The album draws inspiration from Leonard Cohen, the coastal landscapes of Cornwall and the romantic poetry of William Blake. Its ten tracks include "Witness", "Fly Tipping", "Second Sermon", "Real Thing" and "God of All the Stupid Things I Say". A London headline concert at St Pancras Old Church is scheduled for April 29.
UK Gothic promises an intriguing combination of spontaneity and literary ambition. Apparently three days is entirely sufficient to record an album when nobody insists on spending six months arguing about the precise sound of a tambourine.
