Glasgow post-punk quartet The Ninth Wave have announced their long-awaited third studio album There's No Such Thing as Death, scheduled for March 12, 2027 through Rock Action Records. The announcement accompanies new single "SD54 FXZ", marking the band's return after four years without a full-length release. Their previous album Heavy Like A Headache arrived in 2022, establishing the group as one of Scotland's more adventurous contemporary guitar bands.

The new record was created during summer 2026 at Black Bay Studio on Great Bernera in the Outer Hebrides, with producer Dan Austin overseeing the sessions. Rather than relying heavily on synthesizers, the musicians developed a more direct guitar-oriented sound. The lineup features Haydn Park-Patterson, Amelia Kidd, Calum Stewart and Kyalo Searle-Mbullu. Recording together allowed the four musicians to concentrate on collective performances rather than constructing arrangements through extensive overdubbing.

The ten-track album includes "Jellyfish", "Bitumen", "There Was a Heart", "SD54 FXZ" and "Waiting on a Heart Attack". A live-performance video accompanies the new single. The band have also announced British concerts for April 2027, including Glasgow, Brighton, London and Manchester. Additional appearances supporting The Twilight Sad and participating in a Frightened Rabbit celebration are scheduled before the album's arrival.

The Ninth Wave's return demonstrates that extended creative breaks need not indicate the end of a musical partnership. Apparently spending several years away from the release treadmill and then recording on a remote Scottish island can produce something considerably more interesting than another carefully optimised streaming single.
