Cult Glasgow indie group The Yummy Fur release Everybody Talks About the Weather through Upset The Rhythm, reconnecting the wiry energy of their earlier work with songs written from a considerably different point in life. The band's original late-'90s and early-2000s run occupies an important little corner of Scottish independent music history, not least because members later surfaced in Franz Ferdinand and other projects. Their return is therefore more interesting than the standard heritage-band exercise of finding the old jackets and hoping somebody remembers the choruses.
Recent single "Wanda" takes inspiration from Barbara Loden and her 1970 film of the same name, turning cinematic identity and dislocation into compact guitar music. Other tracks including "Cogs," "My Lasagne" and "Unity Over Europe" have also appeared in recent live sessions, demonstrating that the band retains its fondness for short, sharp arrangements and titles that sound as though somebody has overheard a strange conversation on public transport.
The new album arrives on Upset The Rhythm in digital, CD and vinyl editions, including an appropriately cheerful coloured pressing. Everybody Talks About the Weather finds a band with history refusing to sound embalmed by it. There is nostalgia available if you require some, but fortunately it has to chase the indie rock songs rather than lead them.
